In Memory and Light

New Delhi, 2000

This posthumous exhibition gathered together some of the last landscapes painted by Manohar Kaul, celebrating not only his mastery of watercolour but the profound sense of serenity and spiritual reflection that marked his final years. His art, drawn from the Himalayan stillness he often turned to, became increasingly meditative—imbued with silence, colour, and clarity. These works stand as both farewell and affirmation, offering viewers one last glimpse of the luminous world Kaul carried within him. A tribute in form and feeling, the show was organised by the AIFACS as a testament to his lifelong devotion to art and the society he helped shape.

Visitor book comment by Dr. Karan Singh – 2000 exhibition

“Pt. Manohar Kaul was something of an institution. In half a century he painted and wrote, and made a signal contribution both as an artist and an art critic. This memorial exhibition brings together a fine selection of his water-colours and oils, and highlights his tremendous talent in both these disciplines. His beloved Kashmir was always deeply embedded in his consciousness, and shows in all his paintings. Pt. Manohar Kaul’s three volume History of Indian Art is a standard work of scholarship which will remain a valuable reference work. My deep personal association with him goes back several decades. I pay my tribute to his memory. – Dr. Karan Singh, 8 Dec 2000
